Potential rangers snubbing Fraser Is for mines
Oct 10, 2008

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) says it is still struggling to find people who want to work on the world heritage listed Fraser Island.

Regional manager Rob Allen says a quarter of all the ranger positions on the world's largest sand island, off the south-east Queensland coast, are currently vacant.

Mr Allen says a scheme allowing staff to live at Hervey Bay and fly to the island to work has improved staff retention, but it has not fixed the problem.

"I would attribute it pretty much to the resource boom, where people are attracted for potentially quite high salaries if they have trade skills," he said.

Businesses don't want storm evacuation repeat

1 October, 2008

Rainbow Beach businesses say more work needs to be done to ensure there is not a repeat of storm evacuations at Fraser Island and Inskip Point.

The Rainbow Beach Chamber of Commerce says businesses lost up to 20 per cent of their yearly income when the State Government evacuated campers over the new year period.

President Scott Elms says if storms hit it would like campers evacuated to inland areas so they do not have to leave the region.

"For instance, [if] they moved on to a campground or an emergency area like our local football field or airfield or whatever is necessary to get them away from any danger zone and to higher ground or to more inland camping grounds," he said.

Sustainability Minister Andrew McNamara says he has met local businesses and the Gympie Regional Council about the issue.

"I've got my agency the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] working with the two local councils and Emergency Services Queensland and the respective disaster management committees to make sure that we can identify spots that people can be moved to if it's only for the short-term," he said.
